Dive-watch glossary.

A short reference for the terms that appear on the Aquastar collection of Swiss dive watches, in the patents archive, and across the heritage timeline. Expanding over time.

Bezel
The ring around the watch face. On Aquastar dive watches, the bezel carries the no-decompression scale patented in 1964 by Marc Jasinski (CH 436 140), letting a diver read repeated-dive limits directly off the wrist.
Bathymeter
A wrist-mounted depth gauge. Aquastar filed two: Robert's 1963 dial bathymeter (CH 394 658) and the improved 1966 Bourdon-tube version (CH 436 746) used in the Cousteau saturation-dive era.
Helium escape valve
A one-way valve in the case that releases trapped helium during decompression from saturation dives, preventing the crystal from popping.
Column wheel
The mechanical heart of a high-end chronograph, a notched wheel that controls the start/stop/reset pushers. Found in the Aquastar Deepstar III.
Dive watch
A watch meeting ISO 6425 standards, minimum 100 m water resistance (most modern dive watches are 200-1000 m), unidirectional rotating bezel, legible time at depth.
Decompression
The controlled ascent process that prevents nitrogen bubbles in the blood (decompression sickness). Aquastar's patent-protected bezel was the first mechanical aid for tracking it.
Lume
Luminous material on dial and hands. Aquastar uses high-density Super-LumiNova with an old-radium colour to match the look of the original 1962 Deepstar.
Marine Nationale
The French Navy. The Aquastar Benthos (third generation) was issued to its combat divers from 1979 to 1984.
No-decompression limit
The maximum dive time at a given depth that allows a direct ascent without staged decompression stops. Pre-computers, this was read off the Aquastar bezel.
Skindiver
A compact dive watch from the late 1950s and early 1960s, typically 36-38 mm, with rotating dive bezel and simple movement. The Aquastar Model 60 traces directly to a 1957 reference.
Tropic strap
A perforated rubber dive strap, originally designed in the 1960s, still produced in Switzerland and shipped on Aquastar dive watches.
