Dive-watch dial lume, a collector’s guide

Dive-watch lume explained: radium, tritium, Super-LumiNova, the X1 generation. How to read a dial in pitch dark, and how to spot a relume.

The reason a dive watch has a glowing dial is not decoration. Underwater, light fades within the first few metres and disappears entirely below thirty. A diver needs to read the time and the elapsed minutes in near-darkness, at a glance, which is why luminous material on the hands, markers, and bezel pip is one of the defining features of a dive watch. The story of how that glow was produced is also, unexpectedly, a story about radioactivity, safety, and one of the quiet revolutions in 20th-century watchmaking.

Radium, the dangerous first answer

From roughly 1910 to the 1960s, luminous dials glowed because they were painted with radium, a radioactive element mixed into the paint. Radium is self-luminous: it glows continuously without needing to be charged by light, because its own radioactive decay excites a phosphor in the paint. It worked, and it never needed recharging, but it was genuinely dangerous. The women who painted radium dials, famously the "Radium Girls" in the United States, suffered severe radiation injuries. Radium dials also lose their glow over decades, not because the radium decays (its half-life is far longer than a human lifetime) but because the radiation degrades the phosphor it excites. A vintage radium dial today typically no longer glows, but it is still mildly radioactive and should be handled with basic care.

Tritium, the safer replacement

By the 1960s the industry moved to tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen that is far less hazardous than radium because its radiation is very weak and does not penetrate skin. Tritium is also self-luminous and needs no charging. Watches with tritium dials were often marked "T" or "T Swiss T" on the dial. Tritium has a half-life of about twelve years, which means a tritium dial visibly dims over a couple of decades and eventually stops glowing. This is why genuine vintage dials from the 1960s to the 1990s have that soft, aged patina: the tritium has decayed and the phosphor has yellowed. A small number of watches still use tritium today in a different form: tiny sealed glass tubes filled with tritium gas, known by trade names such as gas tube lume. These glow continuously for years without light and are used mostly on military and tactical watches. They are a niche rather than the mainstream.

Super-LumiNova, the modern standard

The revolution came in the 1990s with a strontium-aluminate photoluminescent pigment, sold under the name Super-LumiNova, which is not radioactive at all. Instead of decaying to produce light, it absorbs light (daylight, or a torch) and then releases it slowly in the dark. It charges in seconds and glows brightly for hours, dimming gradually through the night. Because it is inert, it does not degrade or fade with age the way radium and tritium phosphors did. A Super-LumiNova dial will glow as well in thirty years as it does today. Every modern Aquastar uses Super-LumiNova, and the higher grades, sometimes labelled X1, are engineered for maximum initial brightness and longer afterglow. The trade-off against tritium is that it must be charged by light and will eventually fade to dark overnight, whereas tritium glowed unaided; for a dive watch, which is exposed to light before every dive, this is not a practical limitation.

How to read lume, and how to charge it

To get the most from a photoluminescent dial, expose it to a bright light source for a minute or two before you need it. Daylight charges it fully; a torch works in a pinch. The glow is brightest in the first minutes and settles into a lower, steady output that lasts through a dive and often through a night. On a dive watch, the two elements that matter most are the minute hand and the bezel's zero pip, because the relationship between them is what tells the diver elapsed bottom time. Lume and authenticity

Lume is one of the first things a knowledgeable buyer inspects on a vintage watch. Original tritium ages unevenly and turns a warm cream or tan; a suspiciously uniform, bright glow on a supposedly vintage dial suggests a relume, the reapplication of fresh luminous paint, which sharply reduces a vintage watch's value and originality. On modern watches, faux-aged lume (fresh Super-LumiNova tinted beige to imitate patina) is a styling choice, not a fault, but buyers should know the difference between genuine aging and cosmetic tinting.
