A dive watch is not just a watch that survives water. It is a timing instrument, and timing is what keeps a diver safe. Bottom time governs how much nitrogen the body absorbs, and nitrogen governs how a diver must ascend. Long before wrist computers, divers timed their dives with a rotating bezel and a set of tables. Understanding how that works is worth doing even if you dive with a computer, because the bezel is the backup that never runs out of battery.

Why timing a dive matters

As a diver descends, the increased pressure drives nitrogen from the breathing gas into the body's tissues. The deeper the dive and the longer the bottom time, the more nitrogen is absorbed. On ascent that nitrogen must be released slowly; ascend too fast and it forms bubbles in the blood and tissues, causing decompression sickness. Dive tables and dive computers both exist to answer one question: given this depth and this elapsed time, how must the diver ascend safely? The watch's job is to measure the elapsed time accurately so that answer can be applied.

The elapsed-time bezel, the fundamental technique

The standard method uses a 60-minute unidirectional bezel. The procedure is simple and reliable:

  1. At the moment the dive begins, rotate the bezel so its zero marker (the triangle or luminous pip) aligns with the minute hand.
  2. As the dive proceeds, the minute hand sweeps forward while the bezel stays put. The number on the bezel that the minute hand now points to is the elapsed bottom time in minutes.
  3. Read it at a glance whenever needed. No mental arithmetic, no remembering the start time.

Because the bezel only turns counter-clockwise, an accidental knock can only move the zero marker backwards, which makes the watch read more elapsed time than has truly passed. The diver would then surface early, the safe direction to err. The no-decompression bezel, Aquastar's contribution

The elapsed-time bezel tells you how long you have been down. It does not tell you how long you may safely stay. For that, a diver traditionally consulted a printed dive table. Aquastar's answer, patented in Geneva in 1964 and first shipped on the 1962 Deepstar Chronograph, was to put a working version of the table onto the bezel itself. The no-decompression bezel marks the relationship between depth and the maximum bottom time allowed at that depth before a decompression stop becomes necessary. The diver reads their depth from a gauge, finds it on the bezel, and reads off the remaining safe bottom time, then watches it run down. It is a mechanical dive computer, and it never fails.

Aquastar's no-decompression bezel is the first and only such bezel designed to work across repetitive dives, not just a single descent. Repetitive diving, several dives in a day, complicates the nitrogen calculation because each dive leaves residual nitrogen that affects the next. The internal compressor ring

Some dive watches place the timing bezel inside the crystal, rotated by a second crown rather than by the outer edge of the case. The technique of reading it is identical, align the marker with the minute hand at the start, read elapsed time as the hand sweeps, but the internal ring cannot be knocked out of position by a wetsuit cuff or a bump against the boat. The bezel as backup, even in the computer age

Almost every recreational diver today wears a dive computer that tracks depth and time continuously and calculates the ascent automatically. That does not make the bezel obsolete. Computers run on batteries, and batteries fail. A diver trained to time a dive on the bezel, and to know their planned bottom-time limit before entering the water, has a fully mechanical backup that cannot flood, discharge, or crash. This redundancy is the reason serious divers still learn bezel timing, and the reason a genuine dive watch remains a working instrument rather than a nostalgic accessory. The discipline is simple: set the bezel at the start of every dive, out of habit, even when the computer is doing the real work.
