Must-have features of a professional diver

The six specs professional divers actually check before buying: 200m+ water resistance, screw-down crown, unidirectional bezel, anti-magnetic case, lume legibility, and the insider-tip filter most buyer’s guides miss.

"Dive watch" is a phrase that gets attached to a lot of watches that have never been near water. A genuine professional dive watch is defined by a short list of features, each one solving a problem a diver actually has. The modern standard for these features was formalised in the 1990s, but the individual solutions were worked out by Swiss makers, Aquastar among them, in the 1950s and 1960s. Here are the six that matter, and what each one is for.

1. Water resistance of 200 metres or more

The floor for a real dive watch is 200 metres of water resistance. That figure is a static pressure rating with several multiples of margin over the roughly 40 metres a recreational scuba dive actually reaches, so it accommodates the dynamic reality of diving: arm movement, water entry at speed, temperature changes at the gaskets. 2. A unidirectional rotating bezel

The rotating bezel times the dive. The diver aligns the bezel's zero marker with the minute hand at the start of the dive and reads elapsed bottom time off the bezel scale as the minute hand sweeps. The critical detail is that a proper dive bezel rotates in one direction only, counter-clockwise. If a wetsuit cuff knocks it during the dive, it can only rotate to show more elapsed time than has actually passed, never less. That fail-safe tells the diver to surface early rather than late. 3. A screw-down crown

The crown is the most vulnerable point on any water-resistant watch because it is the one part designed to move. A screw-down crown threads onto a sealed tube, compressing gaskets into a locked, sealed position for diving. A push-pull crown relies on friction gaskets alone and is more easily disturbed. Any watch built for real diving uses a screw-down crown, and the discipline of screwing it fully home before entering the water is the single most important habit a diver can keep. 4. High-contrast, luminous legibility

Underwater, light fades fast and colour disappears with depth. A dive watch dial has to be readable in gloom, so it uses large, high-contrast markers and generous luminous material on the hands, the hour markers, and the bezel's zero pip. Modern watches use Super-LumiNova, a non-radioactive photoluminescent pigment that charges in light and glows for hours. 5. An anti-magnetic case

Magnetism is the quiet enemy of a mechanical watch. A magnetised balance spring runs fast and loses accuracy, and divers often work near magnetic equipment, from boat electronics to, for military divers, mine-clearance gear. A dive watch built to a serious specification includes some anti-magnetic protection, whether a soft-iron inner cage or a movement built from less magnetically susceptible alloys. Anti-magnetism was a written requirement in several 20th-century national-navy dive-watch specifications for exactly this reason.

6. A robust, serviceable case and bracelet

A dive watch is a tool that has to survive knocks, pressure, salt water, and years of use, then be resealed and sent back down. That means a case built from corrosion-resistant steel or titanium, a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal on modern watches, and a strap or bracelet that stays secure on a wetsuit. Crucially, it means the watch can be serviced: gaskets replaced, seals renewed, water resistance restored. A dive watch you cannot reseal is a dive watch with an expiry date.
